About Walterboro Wildlife Sanctuary

Walterboro Wildlife Sanctuary is managed by the Audubon South Carolina and is located just outside the town of Walterboro in Colleton County. Spanning approximately 900 acres, this sanctuary showcases a variety of ecosystems including pine and hardwood forests, wetlands, and cypress swamps. It was established to provide a protected area for native wildlife and to serve as an educational resource for the public. The sanctuary plays a key role in regional conservation efforts, especially for migratory bird populations that utilize the surrounding ACE Basin, a significant estuarine complex nearby. Visitors to the sanctuary enjoy well-maintained trails that traverse diverse habitats, providing opportunities to see species such as white-tailed deer, wood ducks, wild turkeys, and numerous songbirds. The area is notably outstanding for birdwatching, especially during spring and fall migrations. Key recreation activities include hiking, wildlife observation, and photography. Facilities include interpretive signage and a small nature center to enhance the educational experience. Its proximity to both Walterboro town and the larger coastal region makes it a popular destination for locals and tourists interested in low-impact outdoor activities. The sanctuary's relatively flat terrain and variety of habitats appeal to visitors of all ages and skill levels. Seasonal events and guided walks are occasionally offered to help foster appreciation and understanding of the local ecology. Overall, Walterboro Wildlife Sanctuary provides a quiet, natural retreat with well-curated access to South Carolina’s native flora and fauna.
